Complications and errors in combined orthodontic and surgical therapy of skeletal malocclusions

MUDr. René Foltán, Ph.D.

Keynote Lecture - Saturday, September 24, 2011

Just like any other human profession combined orthodonticsurgical therapy of facial skeletal malocclusions is also burdened with certain risk of errors and complications. It is without a doubt and it is also a well documented fact that orthognathic surgery is a safe therapy, where life-threatening complications are extremely rare. They can be avoided by adequate general anesthesia, physiologic surgical technique and proper post-operative care.

Based on our 10 year long experience with over 1300 patients, we would like to present the most common and most relevant errors and complicatons in orthodontic as well as surgical procedures.

The lecture will focus on most common errors in planning of combined therapy of skeletal malocclusions, errors in presurgical orthodontic phase and in early postsrugical care. A great variety of errors in surgical part will also be mentioned with the consequences for the treatment outcome.

It is our goal to always decrease the incidence of such problems by the means of continuing education to prevent them and practicing the protocol how to solve complications when they arise. Also our patients need to be informed about all possible drawbacks of therapy. It is extremely important to provide information to other clinicians to avoid repeating these mistakes and improve results of combined orthodontic and surgical treatment of skeletal malocclusions.
